Differentiation
Learners needing support
Could be supported by cutting out their designs, placing the drawing on the soap and then ‘drawing’ the outline design onto the soap by carving lightly in pencil; may need help selecting the appropriate tools, and teacher visual demos will be very important; may find it useful to have some spare bars of soap to use as practice pieces – children can try out the tools and decide if they make the desired mark or cut.
Learners working at a stretch
Could be encouraged to advise other children on which tool to choose for particular marks; could be challenged to achieve a really finished piece by either smoothing the surface of their sculpture or by adding details or texture with the various tools; should adapt their ideas as they work if they encounter any problems with their designs.
