Stage 1
Exploring line and shape; working and experimenting with different materials through observational and collaborative pieces.
Exploring colour mixing through paint play, using a range of tools to paint on different surfaces and creating paintings inspired by artists Clarice Cliff and Jasper Johns.
Creating simple 3D shapes and structures using familiar materials, learners develop skills in manipulating paper and card, folding, rolling and scrunching materials to make sculptures.
Learning fibre art skills such as plaiting, threading, knotting and weaving to create three-dimensional woven artworks inspired by artist Cecilia Vicuña.
Art and design skills units offer an opportunity to apply learning from previous units in different contexts. In this unit, learners develop their observational drawing, folding, pencil and scissor skills.
Making connections units offer an opportunity to bring the different elements of art together to create a project piece. This unit focusses on composition and working with a variety of art materials to explore texture. Based on the theme of ‘The seaside’, the unit can be adapted to other topics.
Stage 2
Exploring how artists use tone and texture, and applying these techniques in observational drawing
Developing colour mixing skills, learning about the work of artist Romare Bearden and creating textured papers using paint, children compose collages inspired by their exploration of colour and texture in the world around them.
Exploring the way clay can be shaped and joined, children learn a range of essential skills for working with this medium. They learn about the sculpture of Rachel Whiteread and create their own clay house tile in response.
Responding to a design brief, children learn three techniques for working creatively with materials and at the end of the project, evaluate their design ideas.
Consolidating art and design skills whilst developing a love of sculpture, drawing and painting.
Creating an illustration of a superhero inspired by Roy Lichtenstein’s work, learners will learn how to draw facial features to portray different emotions and explore colour and pattern.
